Looking into the east, Sheep Mountain dominates the horizon over The National Elk Refuge. Better known as Sleeping Indian, the mountain's outline resembles an Indian with feet to the north and arms crossed on his chest and a full headdress at the southern end of the ridge.
Sleeping Indian is a great option for sunsets when it lights up golden, along with dramatic cloud formation that often gather in the east during the evenings. The refuge offers an open field view as a the foreground or it's possible to get a high vantage point of the mountain from the National Museum of Wildlife Art, which is perched on the side of a butte directly west of the mountain.
Sleeping Indian distinct shape slowly disappears as you head toward Moose Junction. Timing and placement can make for great full moon rises over Sleeping Indian's head.
